Sparkling wine is generally white or rosé in color but there are great examples of sparkling red wines: for example Italian Brachetto, and Azerbaijani “Pearl of Azerbaijan” made from Madrasa grapes and Australian sparkling Shiraz.

The sweetness of sparkling wine ranges from “Brut”, (very dry), styles to the sweeter “doux”.

Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier are the 3 most significant grape varieties used.

The carbon dioxide content of sparkling wine gives it it’s quality, and may be the result of either natural fermentation, either in a bottle, via the traditional method, in a large tank designed to withstand the pressures involved, or as a result of the injection of carbon dioxide as in some value sparkling wines.
